Here are some things you may need to know about an eye and vision exam.

What Are They Used for?

Our optometrist can use an eye and vision exam to check for a variety of issues that can occur. Your physical eye can be damaged or infected and the only way to find the problem and treat it may be through an eye exam. Likewise, you may need to see an optometrist for vision correction, which is a common need. If you get regular eye and vision exams, you may be able to catch and correct problems much earlier.

What Is an Eye Exam?

An eye exam is a physical examination of the eye that only occurs in a sterile eye doctor’s office. During this exam, our optometrist can check your eye for problems. She can check the outside of it, then give you drops to dilate your pupil so they can look inside. This exam usually requires specialized equipment. It may also take a while, since you may need to give the eye drops time to take effect. Eye exams can catch physical problems like glaucoma and damage from diabetes, allowing you to get treatment for them earlier and helping you to prevent vision loss.

What Is a Vision Exam?

A vision exam is a test that specifically checks the ways that your eyes and brain see the world. Unlike eye exams, vision screenings can be done in various community centers like schools and hospitals. You don’t need to be in the optometrist's office for it. A vision exam may generally have you test your vision by reading signs at various distances. You might also be tested for colorblindness during this exam. During these tests, they can see if you need glasses. When they’re done outside of an eye care center, you may be referred to an eye doctor for further examination.
